The US outdoor furniture market stands enthused by the rapidly changing lifestyle trends in favor of greater outdoor indulgence. With family life steadily extending beyond the four walls of a closed home, the business case for outdoor furniture is expected to become stronger, and more lucrative. Rising penchant among homeowners to entertain guests outdoors is leading to increased number and frequency of outdoor parties, barbeques, high tea, and lawn picnics. This is leading to increased demand for outdoor gas grills, outdoor fireplace, decorative patio umbrellas, poolside chairs, tables and recliners, among several others. As an extension of one’s living space, the outdoors are being furnished with great care and high style. Being perceived as a style statement than a necessity, outdoor furniture market is expected to be influenced largely by innovations in styles, colors and designs. Technology innovations in weather resistant materials, and furniture fabrics, which extend product durability, are also forecasted to drive demand for outdoor furniture. Exquisite fabrics, which are resistant to mold, mildew, and the sun are prompting an increasing number of consumers to invest in classy outdoor furniture, a purchase decision, which was hitherto bogged down by durability and replacement cost related issues. After closing in mid-2007, Thomasville Furniture’s Plant C in Davidson County, N.C., is back up and running, according to a report Thursday in the Lexington (N.C.) Dispatch.
Around 50 people, many who previously worked for Thomasville, are making chairs to complement work at the company’s plant in Lenoir, John Hastings, vice president of communications for Furniture Brands International, said in the report. Thomasville hired back around 100 workers in Lenoir when that plant increased production in July.
Thomasville cited increased costs for outsourcing some jobs in China, along with the cost of shipping goods from Asia, for the new domestic production.

Furniture Brands International announced that it is consolidating all five of its Broyhill upholstery manufacturing plants in North Carolina into one facility in Lenoir, NC.
The plant in Lenoir, NC, used to manufacture Pacemaker case goods, but it has been idle since 2006. Furniture Brands CEO Ralph P. Scozzafava said the move will help Furniture Brands increase its production of upholstery furniture.
“With more than half a million square feet of space that is being configured for maximum efficiency, Pacemaker gives Furniture Brands a platform for the high-volume manufacture of a full range of upholstered products,” Scozzafava said. (more…)

The plummeting housing market, credit crisis and declining consumer confidence have helped to put furniture purchases on the back burner for many homeowners in South Florida and across the country. That’s taken a huge bite out of business for furniture retailers like City Furniture owner Keith Koenig.
After years of riding South Florida’s real estate boom, Koenig and other furniture retailers are paying the price and suffering through the bust.
It’s a dramatic turnaround after more than a decade when Florida’s housing boom fueled one of the most vibrant furniture retail markets in the country. While some trouble started in 2006, the last year has marked the worst slowdown in decades. (more…)
